Safety and Health in Biomass Feedstock Production and Processing Operations

Safety and health aspects of the biomass product supply chain will be addressed from a holistic, systems perspective, including review of hazard and risk exposures, development and application of hazard and risk management tools, education and training, and limiting damage caused by unwanted events. Engineering and educational programs and interventions will be viewed from the Pre-event, Event and Post-event phases of any injury incident, and will focus on relevant human, equipment and environmental factors.109 Mechanical and industrial hygiene exposures and risks will be targeted.

Task 5.1. Biomass Safety Program Development (Murphy, Yoder)

Analyze published literature to describe baseline injury rates and patterns, evaluate existing safety & health training programs, and document gaps in each.

Tasks 5.2. Safety and Health Hazard Inventory (Murphy, Yoder, Yanosky)

Document and characterize on-going occupational safety and health exposures and hazards, and determine additional hazard potential with new technologies and processes identified within harvest, logistics, pre-processing, and conversion sectors of Northeast biomass & biofuel businesses.

Task 5.3. Develop, conduct and evaluate a comprehensive safety and health management program (Murphy, Yoder)

Develop, conduct and evaluate a comprehensive safety and health management program available and applicable nationally to owners/operators/employees of biomass feedstock production and processing operations. Major components will include:

Materials and resources developed for this project will be made available nationally through the Farm and Ranch eXtension Safety and Health (FReSH) Community of Practice (CoP) and the website of the team leader,110 and will be presented at workshops both in person and online to reach a national audience. Expected outcomes include: Increased worker awareness and knowledge about industry hazards; management safety awareness, reduced injury exposure.
