NEWBio Mission

Board Resources

NEWBio is in its fourth year of operations on a five-year mission to lay the foundation for a sustainable bioenergy future for the Northeastern United States. NEWBio is a unique collaboration of public and private universities, businesses, non-profit organizations and government agencies, organized around a set of large-scale demonstration sites where short-rotation woody crops and perennial grasses are grown on under-utilized or marginal lands, and where energy crops are integrated with conventional agricultural systems in a mutually supportive way. Our goals are to design, implement, analyze and evaluate robust, scalable, and sustainable value chains for lignocellulosic biomass suitable for advanced transportation fuels for our region.

NEWBio is providing the scientific and practical knowledge needed to design a sustainable future: educating and engaging entrepreneurs, employees, farmers, landowners, students, policy makers, and citizens who will put that knowledge to work; supporting commercial entities that have already developed in the region; and continuing to facilitate interactions to create successful feedstock production to biofuel systems. Hundreds of thousands of acres will need to be in place to support a liquid biofuels refinery. We continue to work toward this goal by supporting other bioeconomy sectors and engaging partner entities on synergistic work to diversify the biomass platform.

Member Log-In

Expectations

Advisory Board members are expected to participate in the project's Annual Meeting (typically held over two days in July/August each year), and in a teleconference midway through each project year (approximately two hours in length). Board members are encouraged to join in monthly "All Hands" meetings as their schedules permit.

The Annual Meeting is an opportunity for Board members to interact with the entire project team and to assess project outcomes and milestones. The Board meets as a group at this time, with the Board Chair delivering a report to the team on the last day of the Annual Meeting.

Compensation

Board members are part of the project's overall effort, and as such, NEWBio covers hotel and meals for the annual meeting, with travel reimbursement upon request. Board members also benefit from the expansion of their own networks, exposure to other ideas and perspectives, and contributing to a greater good.
